Unique store: Tim Gillbertson, Julie Oliver (artist) and Lynley Means (barber) at the opening of Barber Art in Marton. Photos: SUPPLIED Zaryd Wilson Marton's newest attraction opened this month and is already paying dividends for its two creators. Marton barber Lynley Means and artist Julie Oliver have joined forces in what is being dubbed 'Barber Art'. About 50 people attended the opening night and three of Oliver's works sold in the first week. ''Excellent, it was overwhelming,'' said Lynley. ''Far better than we expected.'' She said while it was helping sell Oliver's art, it was also increasing the barbering side of the business. ''The foot traffic has increased like you would never believe. It's been on-going since.'' Lynley said they had already had two full tour buses through and had just taken a booking for another one at the end of the month. She said the tourists are also spending at other Marton stores. ''So it's good for Marton.'' ''All it needs now is for the Marton businesses to make the most of this. ''I can't have 30 people sitting in the barber shop (at once) watching Julie paint.'' Oliver will be painting in-store every second Wednesday while her art will be permanently displayed. The entire display will be refreshed every 12 weeks. ''It's the best thing we could have done,'' the women agree. Oliver is a Mangaweka artist. One of her trademarks is painting she does on old saw blades.
