Photo: SUPPLIED By FENELLA ATKINS Making the decision to go on Outward Bound was the best decision I have ever made. My three week adventure started when I boarded the Wellington ferry excited but nervous and unsure what to expect. As soon as we arrived at Outward Bound, Ana- kiwa, we were off on a run! We ran through thick, sticky mud which our instructors made us put on our faces. It crossed my mind at this point: What have I got myself into? They then explained that while on your three-week course no-one knows you and you can wear whatever mask you like. However, the best thing to do is to be yourself and let people find out who you genuinely are. We then went for a swim (in our clothes and shoes!) in the freezing water and washed the mud off our faces. There were many highs and lows during the inten- sive three weeks, but what felt like lows at the time were what our instructors called type-two fun . These are the activities you don t always enjoy at the time but they are the things you look back on and remember as challenges you overcame. Throughout the three weeks we tried numerous activities -- we sailed, kayaked, rock climbed, tramped, and climbed along high ropes 10 metres above ground. Some of these activities really pushed me outside my comfort zone and helped me to accomplish things that I never imagined I was capable of. The people I met and the memories I made are irreplaceable. My instructors were both awesome and helped me to extend myself and reach new limits. I also want to thank my local sponsors, Lions groups, Rotary and the FAHS OPA, without them I would not have been able to participate in this experience of a lifetime. An important message that was instilled at Outward Bound was to pass on the baton to inspire other people to challenge them- selves. So go on, grab this incredible opportunity and discover what is important to you! Fenella Atkins is a FHS student. She has just achieved level 2 NCEA and is starting year 13. She is also a media studies student at the school. See Page 31 for information about a local fundraiser for two selected Feilding High School students to attend Outward Bound.
