Photo: SANDRA CROSBIE By SANDRA CROSBIE There are fresh faces at Feilding's New World. Todd Carter and Nicola King took over as owner/operators of the shop on Waitangi Day and are excited about their shift to Feilding. The couple and their family settled into a home minutes from the store at the beginning of the year and spent the last couple of weeks familiarising themselves with the store and getting to know staff and suppliers. What attracted us to the Feilding New World was the lovely town, the great crew and store,'' said Todd. The couple were well-known and popular operators of the Eastbrook Four Square in Whanganui, which they operated for the past three years. Todd has spent the majority of his life work- ing in or around groceries. His parents owned smaller grocery stores while he was growing up and on leaving school he completed a butchery apprenticeship. Before operating the Whanganui store, Nicola had a background in IT, and says their experiences and diversified skills create a great partnership. We will be quite hands-on with the day-to- day operations. If the butchers need a hand making fresh sausages -- I'll be there. Same goes for the bakery and delicatessen areas,'' said Todd. Nicola enjoys the produce department and is happy to assist when necessary. She will have a focus on administration and is looking forward to working with staff, and meeting customers. With about 80 staff, they are confident they will have the time to be out the front meeting people and continuing to provide excellent service for their customers. All staff have been offered positions under the new ownership so there has been minimal disruption. I think the staff have been keen to meet us, as they have known for a little while that we were coming. They are a good group and have been very accepting and welcoming,'' said Nicola. The couple stress that their big focus is on freshness: I can be quite particular about that,'' said Todd. It has to be fresh when it arrives and fresh when the customers take it home.'' Some innovative changes are already on the cards and customers will quickly see introductions of popular items from their Whanganui store, such as more hot food to takeaway, and more items produced in the bakery. Their children, Renee and Danielle, are happy with their shift, with Renee starting studies at Massey University and Danielle settled into kindergarten. We are really excited to be here, and look forward to getting to know our customers, the town and giving Feilding shoppers a great experience.'' Former owners, the Hogg family, have moved to a new store in Tawa.
