Juniors – A Bentley, S Bentley. - Quality riders and quality races Bike Manawatu Track Cycling Tuesday, January 24. A clear blue summer’s sky with a light westerly breeze welcomed the 28 riders. The night also saw Jaycob Humphreys break the 2000m under-19 pursuit record set by Jesse Sergent seven years ago. New Zealand and Wanganui age group representative Cassie Cameron made the trip from Whanganui seeking some meaningful competition and found it with tight finishes, chal- lenging handicaps and good-sized race fields. The improvement in riders week on week is clear to see and a good rep- resentation of the club’s strength in track cycling should be on display at the Centre Championships. As the quality of the riders climbs so does the quality of the racing. The race of the night could have been awarded to any one of three races. These races showed individuals’ tenacity to push past comfort zones, to bear gritted teeth and to dig as deep as they dare to produce their very best effort. The final race of the night had a finish measured in tyre widths, 1 lap plus head start handicaps awarded in a 12-lap race and a scratch bunch that all but made it through the field. Results: Under-15 Girls 2 lap scratch race: 1st Emily Shearman. Under-15 Boys 2 lap scratch race: 1st Cody Simpson. Under-17 Girls 3 lap scratch race: 1st Kate Stewart. Under-17 Boys 3 lap scratch race: 1st Josh Kendall. Women’s 3-lap scratch race: 1st Cassie Cameron. Men’s 3-lap scratch race: 1st Cameron Gibbon. Masters Men’s 3-lap scratch race: 1st Brent Zimmerman. 2000m Under-19 pursuit: Jaycob Humphreys broke record with 2.34.11 old record 2.35 .54. Under-15 3 lap handicap: 1st Robert Stannard. Under-17 3 lap handicap: 1st Jordan Castle. Twilight cricket supports youngsters Link returns: Feilding junior cricket is delighted to receive a generous contribution to its club funds from Feilding Twilight Cricket. ‘‘Over time, funds accumulate and it’s great to be able to support our young cricketers through donations like this to Feilding Junior Cricket and local schools,’’ says Feilding Twilight cricket organiser, Stuart Atkins. Feilding Junior Cricket chairwoman Brenda Manley says with personnel changes within junior cricket, ‘‘this link was lost and it’s great both forms of the game have reconnected’’. With several Saturday morning games having to be abandoned due to weather and ground conditions last year, junior cricket is looking forward to lots of action on the field when school returns. This season Manawatu Cricket has introduced competition points for the intermediate, premier and primary A-grade teams. Registrations for the Milo Have a Go programme are currently being taken through Manawatu Cricket Association. It runs on Thursday nights at Kowhai Park, from 5.30pm till 6.30pm. New players and children who have moved into the area over the holiday period who wish to register are welcome and can contact Brenda on 324 0581 for information.
