Over the past 33 years, this pro- gramme has become a positive environment for over 50,000 students weekly in 22 countries. In 2012, New Zealand franchises cel- ebrate successfully operating for 20 years. The Palmerston North branch opened a few years later. Principal, Sophia Parker took over this Acad- emy in 2002 and is proud to have been running classes in Palmerston North, Feilding and Wanganui for the past decade. Sophia is still extremely passion- ate about what she does. Even on a day when I m feeling a little tired, I still buzz when I go to teach. As much as I motivate the children, they also motivate me! she says. Sophia loves seeing the changes with the children as they become more confident in themselves. She strongly believes in the principals of the Helen O Grady programme. Coming from a background of teach- ing and performing, she believes how wonderfully the programme can help develop children with good strong life skills and has had first hand experience with this over the past 10 years. It s amazing how many success stories we have had with students through the Academy, said Sophia. Just reading some of the testimonials on the Helen O Grady website justifies the positiveness of this programme! Sophia still has students who began their first classes at the same time she became principal. What well-rounded young individuals these students have become, she said. They are our future and I couldn t be prouder of them. Class activities include speech, creative movement, dance dramas and improvisation. The first three terms of the year are devoted to developmental drama and in the fourth term the students begin work on a scripted production to perform for parents and friends. The Academy has three different class levels, Lower Primary (5-8 yrs), Upper Primary (9-12 yrs) Youth Theatre (13-18yrs). The Academy has been so popular with students that many of the 18 year olds like to continue the classes; Sophia finally has plans to start an adult class soon, and this will allow the older students to con- tinue with an adult group. Sophia also runs the programme in rural schools which is becoming more popular. She is also open to looking at running elective programmes for any mainstream schools in the area that are interested in trialling the classes. Call Sophia on (06)354 6323 or visit helenogrady.co.nz.
