The event is one of the highlights of this year's VCC Rally. By LAURA WALTERS Motorsport events are usually all about the speed, but the racing event being held at Manfeild as part of this year's Vintage Car Rally will be all about class. The Manfeild Pomeroy Event will be held on January 21 and will fea- ture a range of vintage and classic cars that have been part of this year's Vintage Car Club Rally. Manfeild Pomeroy Event chair- man Roger White said the concept behind a Pomeroy event was to use a criteria devised by Laurence Pomeroy to put all cars on an even playing field by taking into account their age, type, and modifications. It balances it out,'' he said. This would be the third time the event would be run at Manfeild, but it was still a relatively new event for most people taking part, Mr White said. This year's six-day rally would be the ninth international car rally held in Whanganui, and the 66th international rally held in New Zea- land. The cars would travel from Whanganui to Feilding every day. And on the day of the Pomeroy event they would make a special trip. Mr White said the specialised event had got a lot more interest than a straight speed race. The New Zealand Vintage Car Club tried to include one motorsport event in the rally each year, and the Pomeroy event was a good way to race a huge range of cars on an even playing field. So far there were 66 entries in the event. And the cars spanned in age from 28 years old to 106. The cars would be tested on speed and breaking at the beginning, and then categorised. The events would include the quarter-mile standing start, the quarter-mile flying start, the slalom, precision breaking, and a target number of laps in a specified time. They are real amateurs,'' Mr White said. Therefore, the event needed to be tailored to their needs. It's a fun event.'' The event would also include his- toric racing car demonstrations of a Maserati 250F, Ferrari 750 Monza, Stanton Corvette, and Pink Floyd drummer, and classic car enthusiast Nick Mason would demonstrate a Gulf Ford GT40. Mr White said most people taking part in the rally were middle-aged, and had got into vintage, or classic cars as a hobby. Mr White had been involved with the club since he was 15 and would be receiving his 50-year badge at this year's rally. I got an old car, and I got pointed towards the vintage car club to help.'' The Manfeild Pomeroy Event is on January 21 at Manfeild Park. Everyone is welcome to watch. Entry is $10, under-12s free.
