Off: Until he hits the ground. Hit the fence: The bull chases bullfighter Brian Bird onto the fence. Caught: Russell Haste has a nasty moment when his hand got caught in the rope on Mayhem Mike. Bull fighters Shane and Brian Bird leap into action to help free the rider. Muddy landing: Tehiko Neill hits the ground hard when Fender Bender did his best and bucked him off. A wet day meant numbers were down at the annual Parklee bull ride on Saturday. However, the riding went on, with plenty of mud, spills and a few sore muscles for the riders who hit the ground hard. David Green of Waipukurau won the buckle in the qualifying section, against the only other qualifier, Will Bruce. But it was bulls six, as all six riders in the short round of the Open section hit the ground before their eight seconds were up. The winner of this section was Paddy Church from Turangi who went home with a chainsaw for his efforts to gain 76 points on Hammer. We were quite pleased with the day,'' said organiser and host of the day Roger Bird. The loyal crowd arrived in their wet weather gear, and when the heavens opened just before the start, most stayed and saw some great spills.'' Most of the young bull riders left straight after the event, which started at 11am this year, for a 10-hour drive to Sunday's rodeo in Whangarei, chasing more points towards the finals to be held in Tai- hape on March 3. The Costa Plenty 4x4 club gave rides for a donation to Riding for the Disabled. Bobbie Nicholls captured the action.
