SUMMER READING By SUE BAKKER, LIBRARY ASSISTANT, FEILDING LIBRARY THE DOVEKEEPERS By Alice Hoffman This novel is about the lives of four women which inter- sect in the year 70AD, during the siege of the Jewish citadel, Masada. Supplies are dwin- dling and the Romans are draw- ing near. The women are dove keepers, and all are keepers of secrets, secrets about who they are, where they come from, who fathered them, and who they love. There is Yael, the assassin's daughter whose heart- break leads to her true path in the ruins of the desert. Revka is the baker's wife who loses her dearest treasure on earth and yet finds the strength to protect her family. Aziza leads a secret life not even those closest to her could imagine. Marit is a beautiful witch of Moab, a woman as loyal as she is dangerous. The book combines history, magic, romance. Hoffman's books are always different to anything else I read, and I love her writing style. THE SILENT GIRL By Tess Gerritsen This story goes back to a crime which occurred 19 years earlier, leav- ing five people dead. The incident was known as the Red Phoenix mass- acre, named after the restaurant in Chinatown where the murders took place. When the unidentified corpse of a beautiful woman is found on a roof with her neck slashed and her hand severed, Pathologist Maura Iles and Detective Jane Rizzoli investigate. Eventually it becomes clear there is a connection between this killing and those which occurred earlier. This book is engrossing, fast-paced, and suspenseful. Gerritsen, who has Chinese roots, incorporates Chinese history, martial arts, and forensics into her story. I like the way she carries her strong woman characters through most of her books. NEW CONTAINER STYLE By Adam Caplin This book has some awesome ideas for recycled pots to enhance the beauty of your garden. It inspires you to look in op shops and around your own home for imaginative ideas for containers and gives you ideas for plants that would suit them. Great photography in this book, too. THE MURDERER'S DAUGHTERS BY R S Meyers Tragedy strikes on the day before Lulu's 10th birth- day. In a drunken outrage, Lulu's father kills her mother and stabs her little sister, then unsuccessfully tries to kill himself. He is put in prison and Lulu and Merry are effectively orphans. The girls' relatives do not want them and they are placed in a group home. Eventually they are taken in by a wealthy family but the girls never feel as if they fit in. This story spans 30 years and the sisters deal with what happened in very different ways. Lulu spends her life trying to pretend her father is dead, while Merry feels compelled by fear and duty to keep him a part of her life. This is a testament to the power of family ties that bind, but they can also divide.
