Come in today Get out Get going Get active POOL • GYM • EVENTS Get out and go local Great choice: The Rangitikei has more than its beauty to offer people. Entertainment is on tap if you want adventure and getting back to nature. Photo: SUPPLIED. Still trying to find things to enter- tain the kids? Check out what s available in your own back yard -- your Rangitikei back yard that is! OK so nothing is completely free but here s a few activities with little cost that provide loads of fun and entertainment for the whole family. Take a day trip to another town, pack a picnic lunch and find a park to venture into, or take your photo with the iconic image in each town. Bulls, well you can guess what to find there, Marton has Captain Cook, Hunterville the Huntaway Dog, Mangaweka has an inter- national airport! and Taihape the famous Gumboot. Marton and Taihape offer swim- ming pools for a small fee or if you re keen to swim in a local river, there s plenty of river accesses throughout the district, and, of course, there s Turakina Beach and Scotts Ferry for the more adventurous. Bulls Domain picnic area is on Criterion Street. Take a picnic, there s plenty of room to throw a ball around or for the kids, big or small, there s a skate park and an adventure playground for the litt- lies. Bulls Heritage Walk and Kiwi- walk maps are available from the Information Centre at the Bus Depot on SH1. Marton has three parks. Centen- nial Park offers a skate park, tennis courts and a cricket pitch. A Youth Centre also operates here, which caters for 12 to 24 year olds -- call Travis White at Rangitikei District Council for opening times in Janu- ary. Wilson Park has a couple of soccer and league fields to throw the ball around and a great playground for the kids. Marton Park is in the middle of town, right behind the shopping centre and has a lovely rose garden and rugby grounds. In Hunterville you ll find Queen s Park Walkway; a nice rest spot on SH1 with a 5 to 10 minute easy scenic walk. Mangaweka Camping Grounds and Scenic Reserve is just 2km from Mangaweka Village and offers river access for swimming and fishing or you can picnic or take a bush walk. Taihape: take your old wellies and see how far you can chuck them down Gumboot Alley. It s not as easy as you might think! At Taihape Memorial Park you ll find a skate park, children s play area, bush walks and a sports ground. Walk up to the lookout at Mt Stewart Res- erve (10 mins) or grab a map from the Information Centre for the Tai- hape Heritage Walk and Kiwiwalk. Other activities available in the district include horseback riding, day walks over farms, river rafting for adventure seekers and families, extreme bungy/swing/flying fox rides for the adrenalin junkies out there, arts and galleries, museums and speciality shops. You can grab scrummy candy in Bulls, enjoy an ice cold ice cream in Hunterville, Bulls or Taihape or relax with a refreshing coffee or juice at one of the many chic and up-market cafes throughout the district. For more details on things to do and see in the Rangitikei and coming events go to rangitikei.com or visit an Information Centre -- you ll find one in Bulls, Marton, Mangaweka and Taihape. And whatever you choose to do, remember to have fun, be safe and have a happy holiday!
