Women's events planned Women s cycling events are being increased in the Mana- watu next year. Bike Manawatu has realised that there are a lot of women that cycle but have to compete against men in events. Next year, Manawatu is hosting the NZCT Womens tour, plus women s triathlons. They are also planning rec- reational rides at two levels on Saturday, February 25 in con- junction with the NZCT Women s Tour. The two different courses will both start in Palmerston North Square and finish at Memorial Park. The timing of races will enable participants to watch professional racers depart and then ride on part of the course. The long course starts just after the NZCT Women s tour starts at 11am and the short course at 11.30am. The rides should finish before the end of the professionals race. The short course heads down Main St and on to Napier Rd, turn left onto Stoney Creek Rd, Clevely Line, onto Kelvin Grove Rd, right onto Stoney Creek Rd and back to Memorial Park. The long course heads the same way on Main St, Napier Rd, and Stoney Creek Rd, then onto Ashhurst; Bunnythorpe Rd to Watershed Rd, Reids Line at Hiwinui School, Taonui Rd, Left Campbell Rd to Bunnythorpe, then back to Memorial Park via Clevely Line, Tutaki Rd, and Kelvin Grove Rd -- 48kms. Entry fee $40 includes elec- tronic timing, race pack and lunch. Entries open online soon. See the Bike Manawatu website bikemanawatu.co.nz. Four records broken in Feilding track cycling night race meet BIKE MANAWATU TRACK CYCLING Johnston Park Feilding Results for Thursday, December 8: Tuesday night was called off due to rain and Thursday became a suitable replacement and provided near perfect con- ditions for one-lap record attempts later in the evening. The night s programme included age graded five-lap scratch races followed by two lap handicap races then, in a departure from the routine, we had all of the riders take part in team sprints. Riders were invited to have a go at breaking track records for the one-lap standing start and longer age graded handicap races. Of the nine record attempts we had four broken records and the establishment of one record. One of the broken records was more than 10 years old and another nine years. Hayley Gid- dens of Wanganui took more than four seconds off the senior women s mark. The race of the night was the under-17 boys and girls seven lap handicap race. The race began with the helter skelter expected in a race involving riders in this age group. The scratch bunch included George Roberts, Kate Stewart and Cameron Howell. They gave Campbell Stewart and Josh Kendall a few hundred metres start and a gritty James Den- holm and Takumi Clarke 300m start. George took a leadership role from the start with solid turns on the front as the scratch bunch worked well together to bridge the gap to the U15 rider Campbell Stewart who, while he may be under in gearing, is well over in ability. After the first two laps, all riders were racing but little progress was being made to close any gaps and everyone began giving Ian Gray the handicapper sideways glances. James and Takumi were apply- ing the pressure on the chasers and nervous glances were being exchanged as riders tried to evaluate the size of the task ahead. Lap three saw enthusiasm replaced by fitness and inroads began to be made into the handicaps. With two laps to go the entire field had almost joined into one pack as the bell rang to signal the last lap the second race within the race began and riders positioned themselves in readiness for a mad dash for the line. George made the first bid with 300m to go with Kate close behind and Josh covering both of them. It was at the 200m mark that Cameron made his move from the back of the pack and with a smooth action he slid his way past the field to be clear at the top of the home straight and in control of the race. The charac- teristic single-minded determi- nation of Kate saw her take sec- ond from a fast finishing Josh. Rider of the night awards were judged by timekeeper Steve Perry. He judged Cameron Howell the U17 rider on the back of his win in the hard fought race of the night and Teagan Roffe for a solid effort in the women s 12 lap handicap race. Racing is held on Tuesday nights at Johnston Park Feild- ing with racing to start at 6.10pm. As the track is too slip- pery for the bikes if wet, racing will be cancelled if it is raining.
