Marton's Historical Society is rolling up its sleeves to get Santa's cave ready for the big man to spread some Christmas joy to local children and parents alike. The society will open its cave to visitors on Saturday, December 3, the same day as the Marton Christmas Parade. It would be the second year they had created the cave, and this year they planned for it to be big- ger and better. Marton Historical Society sec- retary Rebecca Tayler said it would have a real cave atmos- phere, with glitter, polystyrene and a fire engine. Children could have their photo taken with Santa or on the children's fire engine for a gold coin donation. Mrs Tayler said the group had been trying to run more activities within the town to get people enthused about the society. We want to make history not be history,'' she said. In conjunction with the cave, the society planned to run a cre- ative christmas tree competition in the community. Schools and businesses would be able to decorate their own tree in accordance with one of the three themes: Kiwiana, Avant Garde, or Recycled. The Christmas tree contest would run from December 3 to 23. Marton's Historical Society had been running events in the com- munity to encourage locals to get involved. We want to improve our rel- evance,'' Mrs Tayler said. The society had 50 members, but no junior members. Santa's cave is open on Decem- ber 3 from 2pm, December 10 and 17 from 6pm till 7pm, December 16 and 21 from 8.30pm till 10pm. Phone 06 327 6689 or email email@example.com.
