Up high: After arriving on a helicopter, Santa's lolly scramble starts the celebrations at the Marton Christmas Party in the Park. Fun for all on Saturday The Marton Christmas parade will be back in town this weekend. It will showcase groups, busi- nesses and schools on Saturday afternoon, followed by the annual Christmas Party in the Park. It will be the fourth year Marton Jaycees have run the par- ade in conjunction with the Party in the Park, but the parade itself has been running for much longer. The afternoon's events will kick off at 3.30pm with a spitfire fly- over. Jaycees event organiser Bren- dan Williams said the parade was a chance for the whole community to come out and have fun. It's a chance for local busi- nesses to showcase themselves,'' he said. It was important for people to support these sorts of community affairs, he said. If communities don't get behind these events people won't give up their time to organise them.'' The floats will be judged in three categories: commercial, com- munity and schools. Last year 25 floats took part in the parade. People can enter before the event, or on the day. Everybody, especially school children, enjoyed putting together their entries, he said. Even building the float can be cool for them.'' At the end of the parade the fun will move to Marton Park. There Santa will join the festivities from a helicopter. Marton Jaycees put on a lolly scramble for the children, before the Party in the Park takes off. Christmas Party in the Park organiser Paula Skou said the whole day was always a good one. The party would get started about 4.30pm. Families should come along and bring their picnics, a rug, and settle in for the evening, Mrs Skou said. The entertainment would be started by young local talent, fol- lowed by Whanganui covers band Lounge Suite. There will also be food for sale. If the weather packs in, the events will move to the Rangitikei College hall. And floats from the parade can be displayed in the Rangitikei Col- lege car park rather than making their way through the centre of town. If you want to enter a float in the parade, or have any questions about Saturday's events ring Brendan Williams on 021 518 411 or Paula Skou on 027 246 3263.
