TO LET FHS Sevens off to Auckland In a few weeks Feilding High School will make the journey north to compete for the national Condor Rugby Sevens title at the College Rifles Rugby Football Club in Remuera, Auckland. Competing in the newly revamped Condor Rugby Sevens tournament is not a first for the school. Feilding has competed in the past when it was an invitational tournament. With a qualification pro- cess in place for 2011, teams from Manawatu and Horowhenua competed in a local competition for the right to compete in the national tournament. Feilding won the Mana- watu/Horowhenua qualifier by fending off Palmerston North Boys' High School in the final 36-22. They will now look to the Condor Sevens where they have been drawn against six-time winners Wesley College from Counties Manakau as well as North Harbour up and comer Ros- mini College, the remaining side is a young Southland Boys' High School team. The finals will be played on the new synthetic rugby fields at the College Rifles Rugby Club in Remuera on the weekend of December 3-4. Feilding High School rugby spokesman Rick Francis says the team's training has been intensive. Since the victory at the regional tournament the team has been undergoing an intensive training regime under school sevens coach Kerry Whale, which has included trainings and prac- tice games against New Ply- mouth Boys' High School and the Manawatu Sevens squad,'' he said. Francis expects the team to be very competitive in the tournament with the aim of finishing at the top of their pool to qualify for the finals. The school has two players who are members of the Manawatu side -- Semesi Masirewa and Jamie Perigo -- who under the watchful eye of Paul Claridge have been training with both squads following the con- clusion of the 15-a-side ver- sion of the game. Sport Manawatu's Ben Koch says rugby sevens is certainly growing in New Zealand at the grassroots level. With the Manawatu Rugby Union offering sevens to both boys and girls it creates a great foundation for growth in the sport locally.'' The tournament is expected to be televised on Sky Sports Rugby Channel following on from the more recent success of the televised 1st XV College Rugby. Keeping the 'euphoria' Grassroots: Games at Mangatainoka have received high praise from rugby greats. The euphoria felt by New Zealand- ers when the All Blacks won the Rugby World Cup is set to con- tinue next year after it was announced Tui Brewery will bring another pre- season Super Rugby game to the Mangatainoka Rugby Grounds. In true No 8 wire style, Tui Brewery will bring the big game to the small town for the third year in a row after securing the Hurricanes and the Crusaders in a pre-season game on Saturday, February 11, 2012. The game follows the success of two previous pre-season games involving the Hurricanes which sold out two weeks before kick-off and attracted around 8000 spectators each year. Held on Neil Symonds' farm next to Tui Brewery, the games showcase grassroots rugby at its best with passionate fans adorned in their regional colours and visibly enjoying the unique setting. It also received the highest praise from some of New Zealand's rugby greats including Sir Brian Lochore, Sir Colin Meads and commentator Keith Quinn. Tui Brewery commercial manager Nick Rogers, who has championed all three games, says he is determined to ensure New Zealanders maintain that amazing sense of euphoria'' following the All Blacks win of the World Cup. Eden Park had its fan trail, a sell out crowd and a fantastic atmosphere -- well come February the tiny township of Mangatainoka will be no different,'' says Mr Rogers. The last two pre-season games held here have emphasised the theatre of going to see rugby and having the Crusaders and the Hurricanes -- two of Super Rugby's most passionate franchises -- will only help build on the feeling the Rugby World Cup gave us. That feeling of pride in supporting your team, that amazing sense of euphoria experienced when they win and the sense of occasion it brings.''
