Lessons in love and life REVIEW: BEGINNERS Directed by Mike Mills Reviewed by Sandra Crosbie Beginners is a quirky, modern, movie which beautifully explores the relationships of three characters Oliver (Ewan McGregor), his father (Christopher Plummer) and Oliver's new-found love Anna (Melanie Laurent). Director and screenwriter Mike Mills based the movie on his own life experience. Beginners started when my father came out of the closet,'' writer-director Mike Mills says in his director's statement. He was 75 years old, and had been married to my mother for 45 years. His hunger to completely change his life was confusing, painful, very funny, and deeply inspiring. Change, honesty, and openness can happen when it seems least likely. Even as he passed away five years later to cancer he was energised, reaching out; he wasn't in any way finished.'' This is a feel-good, thought-provoking movie which is both funny and poignant. The three leads showcase their pro- fessionalism for their craft under artistic direction. Arthur, the lovable Jack Russell, also plays a great role in the movie. Mills' other career as a graphic artist is showcased throughout the movie and in his art direction, with flashcard/flashback moments and his quirky trademark drawings. With many lighter moments it is still a very thought-provoking movie and certainly makes you think about life and relationships -- in this case, primarily between a father and son. It is also about loss -- from many angles. Beginners is a quality movie which easily absorbs you and will touch you in some way and may give you an insight into what love feels like. Fiery redhead: Peta Mathias brought her latest book to a Feilding breakfast last week. Mathias' musings Peta Mathias -- author and television personality, and New Zealand's most well-recognised faux redhead -- spoke to about 100 people over breakfast at Bookmark Cafe in Feilding last Friday. Mathias' latest book Beat till Stiff is all about transformations, of which the changing by beating gooey egg white into beautiful tight white lightness'' is one example. Turning from a greying brunette to a vibrant redhead changed her life, she said. Famous for her elaborate earrings and cooking with a fistful of rings, she recommends red hair and red lipstick. It is the colour of sex and excite- ment,'' she said, naming Boudicca (Boadicea) as one of the earliest famous redheads. Much more attractive and charming in life than on television, she entertained the audience, keeping them enthralled with her colourful anecdotes about her life. Mathias says she found her true role in life at the age of 45 when she became a television cook and person- ality. It is little surprise she excelled in singing, music and composition at her convent school. Her writing style is easy and colour- ful, although the content of Beat till Stiff is mostly her musings on life.
