Clive Asplin, celebrant. ' For one of the most interesting [weddings] I was asked to dress as Gandalf. Everyone, including the guests was in Lord of the Rings costume. ' Asplin Feilding registrar and celebrant How did you become a mar- riage celebrant? There are two kinds of mar- riage celebrants, civil or inde- pendent celebrants and those who are aligned with a church or other group of that nature. I was licensed to conduct registry office marriages when I was Feilding's registrar of marriages. But Feilding no longer has a registrar. In 1977 the Marriage Act changed the system and JPs and others could apply to become a marriage celebrant. The number of celebrants is limited to the need in the com- munity, depending on the num- ber of residents, and to give a balance of ethnicity and gender, and so on. While I was still registrar of marriages I was asked by friends to conduct a marriage outside the registry office. I had to make an application to become a marriage celebrant and I got the letter back to say, I was accepted. Nowadays it is more con- trolled. But as I was already doing the job, it was pretty automatic. Can anyone become a marriage celebrant? In 1977 the Marriage Act changed the system and JPs and others could apply to become a marriage celebrant. The number of celebrants is limited to the need in the com- munity, depending on the num- ber of residents and to give a balance of ethnicity and gender. It's a 12-month appointment, and must be renewed each year. Can you conduct a Civil Union between same sex couples? You can apply to conduct Civil Unions but it is separate and I was asked if I wished to add that to my licence, but I have not done so. Where have you conduc- ted marriages? The choice of where the wed- ding takes place is up to the couple concerned. I have taken ceremonies in back gardens of family homes, public parks, historic homes, churches, all kinds of places. What was the most unusual wedding? For one of the most interes- ting I was asked to dress as Gandalf. Everyone, including the guests, was in Lord of the Rings costume. I was dressed in a tall white hat and gown and entered through a smoke screen. It was novel but a proper' occasion. I have conducted ceremonies through a translator when there is a language difference. One wedding was a Vietnamese couple among the Vietnamese community. Other weddings have used a sign language translator if one of the couple or a parent is deaf. Its not unusual to be asked to conduct a renewal of vows for a a wedding anniversary. Naming ceremonies, which are christenings without the religious component are also becoming popular. Sometimes I am invited to attend the after' function, but often its just a business arrangement. How do people choose a celebrant? I am usually contacted because people know me or have seen me conduct a wed- ding before. For some families I have become a family friend. I conducted the weddings of three brothers and also the funeral of their grandfather. In another family there were four weddings and a funeral, over a number of years. Do you need a licence for a funeral too? No, anyone can conduct a funeral. It is a not such a pleasant task but one which gives me a privileged position in a time of grief. It's a privilege to be asked, especially if it is a close friend or acquaintance. Funerals too can be held any- where, public gardens, Wharerata, Highden or some- where else that means some- thing special to the person con- cerned.
