Photo: BOBBIE NICHOLLS Heart on watch Manchester Kindergarten has outdone itself when it comes to promoting a healthy heart environment for its families. The kindergarten this week received its fifth annual Healthy Heart Award from the Heart Foundation, and this time it has achieved the top award the Flourishing' level -- the first in Feilding to achieve it.The Healthy Heart Award is partially funded by the Minis- try of Health and encourages early childhood services to promote healthy eating to under fives and their families. Flourishing is the third and highest level of the award and it must be maintained in order to be renewed. Heart Foundation Manawatu Health Promotion Co-ordinator Kat Curnow said the kinder- garten has not only promoted healthy eating habits to the young children but has also extended the promotion to parents. The kindergarten has a flourishing vegetable garden where the children enjoy plant- ing, tending and picking the produce. They are encouraged to bring healthy food for snacks and the healthy tips are promoted through the newsletters, One of the initiatives which contributed to the award was the Backyard Bounty work- shop, which was the brainchild of chairwoman Cindy Duker. I love gardening and think everyone else should too,'' she said. We had an afternoon to spread the message of gardening and invited tele- vision gardener Lynda Hal- linan who talked about how to live out of your backyard and Janice Feyen from the Green Hub who demonstrated making green cleaning products. We also had representatives from the Supergrans who talked about gardening, com- posting and preserving. About 130 people, a cross section of the community came. It was encouraging that we had a handful of young people come, who were new to gardening.'' The Backyard Bounty was a fundraiser for the kindergarten but also a great way to involve our wider community in sharing knowledge of sustainable practices,'' teacher Mel Guylee said. Gardening has become a passion for the children and teachers. Through the development of the vegetable garden the chil- dren are becoming more aware of where food comes from and how they can grow their own healthy food at home.''
