SPORT Get more active this year You may be wondering what all the XFit hype is about. Well, I can tell you this is a great workout. In November, I decided to try out this activity and see what it was about. I went along to KR Personal Training XFit-30 class at Snap Fitness. They have a variety of XFit classes to try out including the ‘‘Shuttle 325’’ and the ‘‘Killa.’’ I have tried both workouts; both are high intensity and following the workouts I found muscles I didn’t know I had. The trainers who take the class are very motivating and make sure you work so hard you can’t sit down and get up without someone helping you the next day. The XFit-30 workouts target every muscle in the body, they are great for your fitness, and a bonus is you can challenge yourself against SERENA RATA will be taking place on Wednesday, February 13, in Feilding. The Splash and Dash Triathlon involves a run, bike ride and a splash down a water slide. Every child that takes part will SPORTMANAWATU others as it’s done in a group class. My favourite thing about them is they only take between 15-30 minutes to complete and then your workout’s done, so there’s no excuse that you don’t have time. With summer here these classes are a great way to get fit, and tone that body up. You will be sore but it is all worth it. Get active tip: Stretching After all those fitness classes and the extra activity you will be doing over summer you’ll need some tips on stretching. Stretching should be a key part of any exercise regime. Stretching can increase flexi- bility, and improve the range of motion of your joints; it can also help prevent injuries. Some top stretching tips are: ❚ Before stretching, warm up with five to ten minutes of light activity such as a light jog. ❚ Hold a stretch for about 30 seconds, then switch sides and repeat. ❚ Always stretch after a workout. ❚ If you have any health conditions or injuries, talk to your doctor or physical therapist about which stretches are right for you. ❚ For some extras tips on stretching correctly head to acc.co.nz. THURSDAY, JANUARY 10, 2013 Shirriffs creeps up on top spot Feilding’s Craig Shirriffs turned around a dismal triseries to almost snatch the lead in the opening round of the national superbike championship at Ruapuna, Christchurch, on Sunday. After a terrible tri-series where he failed to finish in the top five of any race, Shirriffs (Suzuki GSXR1000) finished a close second in both races behind Australian star Robbie Bugden (Suzuki GSXR1000). ‘‘I’m disappointed to not win as I thought I had Robbie in the second race,’’ Shirriffs said. ‘‘I’m stoked, though, to start the championship like this. ‘‘I haven’t begun the opening round well in any of the last three years; in fact I think I’ve got more points today than I got in the entire three South Island rounds last season.’’ Shirriffs said he and his team put in a lot of time trying to sort out the handling of the bike, something he was always confident would happen. ‘‘It was disappointing for us that we struggled in the triseries but we thought we would get it right and the Suzuki was absolutely brilliant today.’’ Shirriffs said he had used only the one front tyre for both races – an error which almost saw him fall at a hairpin when challenging Bugden for the lead near the end of the second race, which also doubled as the New Zealand Grand Prix. 23 SUDOKU SUDOKU 1 Marsden Point, 2 Raymond Chandler, 3 14, 4 Christchurch, 5 Rick Astley, 6 Uranus, 7 Ten, 8 Damper, 9 Morris Minor, 10 John Wayne.
